I was hoping that we would be able to pull a stunt like David vs Goliath or the Gaul vs the Romans, when we entered ourselves in the NBSB and the KNSB cup competitions. For both competitions we were being paired against very strong teams in the first round already. For the NBSB cup we were paired against SG King, who ended 2nd last year and for the KNSB cup we were paired against HMC Den Bosch, who actually won the cup last year.
For the game against we went to Tilburg and gave it our best. Joshua actually had quite a nice position against Mark Haast, but after some inaccurate moves let the position slip. Alexis had a dynamic game, but Jordy was sharper in his play than Alexis was. Pepijn had mixed up the move order in the opening and was slowly but gradually pushed off the board. Also, Nuwan wasn't able to do any damage on the last board. So, after a few hours we had to go back home with 0 points.
Jokingly I put a picture of the Spartans from "300" as picture on our event calendar for the match we were going to play against HMC Den Bosch, thinking this would be a nice heroic call for arms. However, if I'd remember the actual story correctly than I should've known that this was just a very bad idea.... The Spartans were tough and surely, they looked good, threw some punches and did some damage, but in the end they all lost and died. Looking at how the round went; this was exactly what happened. We made a stance and we really tried, but in the end, they were all too strong for us and we lost with 4-0.
This ended both of our cup seasons for this year. Let's hope next year, we'll have some more luck in the pairing, and we can at least make it past the first rounds.
